Electric vehicle rapid charging specialist Engenie is committed to providing the best experience for EV drivers. There’s no special membership fee or card, all charge points have both AC and DC connectors to fit all EVs, and it takes less than 30 minutes to charge up.
Engenie are making payment fast and easy too, with the recent installation of contactless credit/debit card and Apple Pay terminals at their chargers. With this method, our customers are also protected by in-built financial security features.
For a short time from 19 March 2018, an Engenie charge will cost a flat rate of £4 (incl VAT). Then from May 2018, with the release of new functionality on these best-in-class rapid chargers, drivers will only pay for what they use. There’s no connection fee or sign-up cost: simply tap and charge, and get back on the road. We know from industry feedback that this is how customers want to pay for a charge.
The pay-as-you-go rate will be a straightforward 36p/kWh, which makes an average (11kWh) charge cost £3.96 (incl VAT). The interim £4 flat rate is based on this average charge of 11kWh, calculated from Engenie recent charge point data. So if our customers charge up with more than 11kWh during this interim period, the rest is on us.
Engenie are leading the way in enabling practical, clean transport, by partnering with commercial properties and local authorities to develop a network of rapid, reliable charge points strategically located throughout city centres and major trunk routes. Locations will include supermarkets, hotels, restaurants and commercial developments.

Why won’t Engenie chargers be free anymore?
Engenie has received a huge amount of positive feedback on their charging experience, that often focusses on the reliability and speed of the charge point. Such best-in-class technology is not free to install or run, and rapid charging is a growing business. Engenie are introducing a charging rate as part of their long-term business model.
Why are you charging a flat rate and then changing to a PAYG model?
Engenie aims to make charging and payment for charging as fast and easy as possible: our aim has always been for a simple per-kWh rate where the driver only pays for what they use. This functionality will be released across our chargers in mid-2018, so until then Engenie are charging a flat rate based on the average charge at our chargers.
Why is the flat rate £4?
The flat rate is based on the cost of an average Engenie customer’s kWh consumption in one charge, at the forthcoming 36p/kWh standard rate. Engenie data for the period Oct 2017 – Jan 2018 was analysed and the average charge consumption was 11kWh. The interim flat rate was thus set at £4.
What types of cars can charge at an Engenie charger?
All types of EV currently on the road can charge with Engenie. Our chargers have three connectors: CHAdeMO (DC), CCS (DC) and an AC Type 2/Mennekes connector for cars such as the Renault Zoe.
